The Manitoba Farmer Wellness Program (MFWP) has been granted charitable status by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) which the organization says will make it easier to receive donations and expand services.
MFWP chair Marcel Hacault says they can now issue tax receipts for eligible donations, offering sponsors a meaningful way to contribute to the well-being of Manitoba farmers while benefiting from tax deductions. He says this also positions MFWP to access grants and funding opportunities that require a registered charity designation.
The MFWP offers up to nine confidential counselling sessions per year to farm families and employees, delivered by counsellors with backgrounds in agriculture.
According to the Mental Health Commission of Canada, mental health issues experienced by farmers can stem from isolation, a blurred distinction between work and home life, and barriers to mental health services.
