The Virden Oil Capitals are in a dog-fight for top spot in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Sherwood Division.
The Oil Caps have a one point lead over the second-place Dauphin Kings, with each team having 22 games remaining in the regular season.
That means every game from now through to the end of the regular season has a lot of importance.
"We can’t really afford any losses or any losses to teams that are below us," said Virden forward Corey Haverstick on CKLQ’s Oil Caps’ Report on Thursday, "It’s going to be a battle and we have to do the best we can to stay on top."
The Oil Capitals and the rest of the MJHL teams could also be looking to make some roster moves prior to the Junior A trade and roster deadline on Friday (January 10).
Haverstick says, as a player, he just has to let the chips fall where they may.
"I just try to take things as they come, I try not to worry about it as much as possible, " said Haverstick, who was Virden’s Player of the Month for December, "Just let the people that are doing the job do their job. Just keep working hard, we’ve got practices and games coming up so that all we can think about."
Virden returns to action Saturday when they visit the Waywayseecappo Wolverines.
It’s the team’s only game between now and January 18th.
