Brandon’s 2024 Point-in-Time (PiT) Count, carried out October 17 over a 24-hour period, identified 229 unhoused people, based on PiT Count survey data, transitional housing and service data, as well as observed homelessness.
Based on Brandon’s previous PiT Counts from 2016 to 2024, homelessness in Brandon is on the rise again after a period of seeming progress.
“The results of our count represent the minimum number of people experiencing homelessness in Brandon,” stated Rushana Newman, Executive Director for the Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation, which led the count. “The numbers and details we gathered will help improve our understanding of the needs and circumstances of the people who are affected by homelessness in our city.”
The count was carried out with the help of almost 50 volunteers – from the service sector as well as from the general public – along with the participation of downtown agencies and the generosity of local businesses.
“Collectively, we will use the information we gathered to continue being a voice for the vulnerable population of Brandon. Everyone does count and data amplifies our voice and supports our funding requests,” added Newman.
The Brandon PiT Count received support from Reaching Home, Government of Canada’s Homelessness Strategy (Homelessness, Infrastructure and Communities Canada). Many communities across the country participated and the coordinated effort helps us to create a picture of homelessness in Canada.
