As it turned out, the morning of April 29 wasn’t just busy for those dealing with the results of the federal election. Dauphin RCMP had an eventful morning as well.
A pair of suspects are in custody, and one of them is facing a wide range of charges after a pair of incidents in Dauphin this morning. The first of these incidents took place at about 1:15 AM, when officers were called to a possible home invasion at a residence on Alexandria Street.
According to police, when they arrived at the scene, they found several broken windows and were told by residents that the suspect had left on foot. After making patrols in the area, they arrested a suspect without incident.
Jonathan Parenteau, 28, from Duck Bay was charged with Mischief Under $5000. He is presumed innocent.
As it turned out, the night was still young. An hour later, RCMP were called to a break and enter at a residence on 5th Avenue. According to the press release, the male suspect, who was known to police, had also threatened the female occupant and had injured a dog on the property.
After finding a suspect outside near the residence, police described him as “very agitated and acting aggressive towards police”. Police allege he was non-compliant when they attempted to arrest him, so they deployed a conducted energy weapon before taking him into custody.
According to police, however, the suspect was not done putting up a fight. He tried to resist officers as he was being placed inside the police cruiser, and during this time one of the officers suffered an injury. RCMP did not go into details about the injury, but did say the officer was sent to the hospital for treatment and has since been released.
Police further allege that while being transported to the detachment, the suspect “inflicted considerable damage” inside the back of the cruiser.
Sheldon “Benny” Chartrand, 38, from Dauphin, was charged with Assault on Police Officer, Uttering Threats Against a Person, Resists/Obstruct Peace Officer, Breaking and Entering with Intent, Trespass at Night, Causing Animals Unnecessary Suffering, and Mischief Equal to or Under $5000. He is presumed innocent.
Dauphin RCMP said they continue to investigate.
