SCAM ALERT: Door-to-Door Paving & Construction Scams Across Western Canada.
As the weather warms up and construction season begins, scammers are once again targeting homeowners across Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and British Columbia.
What’s Happening: Individuals are going door-to-door offering “discount” paving, roofing, or driveway work. They often claim to have leftover materials from a nearby job and offer “one-time-only” cash deals.
Equipment is often rented from local businesses and vehicles are registered to different individuals in various towns to avoid tracking. A recent incident shows that the individuals involved are from the UK, operating in multiple provinces under different names.
Common Red Flags:
-High-pressure sales tactics.
-Lack of business licenses or local references.
-No written contracts.
-Cash-only deals or immediate deposits.
-Poor quality work that cannot be guaranteed.
-How to Protect Yourself:
-Don’t agree to unsolicited work—reputable contractors don’t generally operate this way.
-Always ask for ID, licenses, and written estimates.
-Research the company—look for online reviews, Better Business Bureau (BBB) ratings, and ask for local references.
-Don’t pay in cash or upfront for work that hasn’t started.
Report suspicious activity:
-Remember: If it sounds too good to be true—it probably is.
-Help protect your community by sharing this message with friends, family, and neighbors. The more people are aware, the harder it is for scammers to operate.
