As investigation into a disturbing sword attack at Brandon’s Neelin High School continues, the Brandon Police service has released a statement with some updates on the case so far.
In the statement, police said they were still investigating, but they have uncovered evidence in regard to the attackers’ motives.
“The investigation is complex and ongoing, but at this early juncture, we have uncovered a significant amount of evidence that indicates the suspect’s political and racial ideologies were motivating factors in this crime,” said Brandon Police Chief Tyler Bates in a statement. “These findings reinforce the gravity and intent behind the attack, and they are being treated with the utmost seriousness. The offender planned the attack and the perpetration of violence against targets chosen specifically based on race — targeting people of color and immigrants. It was a deliberate, senseless, targeted act of hate. This is disturbing and no one should ever fear for their safety because of the color of their skin, no child should be made to feel unsafe in a place of learning. There is no place in our community for racism, hate, or violence of any kind.”
On June 10, Brandon Police were called to a report of an attack with a sword taking place at Neelin High School. The victim suffered injuries to his torso and hands, including several of his fingers nearly being severed. He is recovering after ten hours of emergency surgery in Winnipeg.
The alleged attacker, meanwhile, was a 16-year-old boy. He has since been ordered to undergo mental health testing. After the attack, Brandon Police said they believed he intended to harm more people before being stopped by an officer with a conducted energy weapon.
“We understand the deep concern this incident has caused,” Bates said. “Brandon Police Service appreciates the support of the community. The mortal danger encountered at Neelin High School has affected us all but has united Brandonites in resilience, kindness and opposition to racism and hatred. Our team has been working diligently, following every lead, and ensuring that no detail is overlooked. We continue to invest our time and resources into this incident, working alongside the Crown Attorney’s Office in pursuit of justice.”
