Red and white is on Dwayne Gylywoychuk’s coaching radar.
The former Wheat Kings’ bench boss will be heading overseas with Team Canada for the upcoming World Under-18 Women’s Hockey Championship.
"One thing that I’ve really picked up about the women’s side of hockey is they’re like sponges, they want to learn," Gylywoychuk told CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston and Lanny Stewart on Monday Sports Talk. "It’s been a good challenge for me to kind of get back to teaching and make sure that I break things down and make sure that I’m teaching it the right way because they’re really organized, they want to know. If you’re not organized, they’ll see right through you."
The Worlds and the 2014 NCAA Women’s Frozen Four coincide with each other and that could lead to a more prominent role for Gylywoychuk on the Canadian coaching staff.
"The head coach, Laura Schuler is at the University of Minnesota Duluth, the other two assistants, Jackie Friesen is at the University of Wisconsin and Cassandra Turner is at Quinnipiac University. They’re all in the hunt for the Frozen Four and my role might expand a little bit depending on if one of those ladies teams makes it," said Gylywoychuk. "If it doesn’t then I’m going to be kind of an eye in the sky, do some pre-scouting and some more video work along with the video coach."
Gylywoychuk and the Canadians are off to Hungary for the tournament from March 23rd to 30th with the team shooting for a third straight gold medal.
