One of Brandon’s iconic curlers is hanging up her shoes.
Lois Fowler is retiring from competitive curling, a move that’ll end more than four decades of competing in the sport.
The move comes after Fowler achieved one of her career highlights, capturing the World Senior Curling title in Sochi, Russia in April.
"I’ve had an excellent career and I just decided when I turned 60 in January that it was time to do other things, travel a bit more," said Fowler this week, "Winning the Worlds, you can’t go any higher than that and its just a nice way to culminate my career."
Fowler’s career also including four trips to the Canadian Women’s Curling Championship including the 1993 Scotties Tournament of Hearts that was played in Brandon, in which her team lost in the final to the late Sandra Schmirler.
At that event, Fowler played on a team that included daughter Rhonda, while she also had a chance to play with son Rob at a Canadian Mixed Championship in 1998.
"It was in Brandon, and playing in front of Brandon and Westman and to lose the final…that was a big highlight in my career," said Fowler, "Those were highlights of my career for sure, curling with my kids,"
Fowler isn’t the only member of that World Senior championship team stepping away as second Cathy Gauthier announced her retirement immediately after the Worlds.
The two remaining members will have a new team on the ice this fall.
Maureen Bonar and Allyson Stewart will be joined on the new foursome by Darcy Robertson and Allyson Bell.
