Fire breaks out again at Brandon’s landfill
The Bd Sun reports that a section of Brandon’s Eastview Landfill caught fire late Monday morning, smoke was visible nearly a kilometre away. This was the third time this year that fire broke out at the site. No injuries were reported. Monday’s fire is the latest in a string of blazes that have hit the Eastview Landfill, raising ongoing concerns about fire risks in waste management areas.
There was no rain or snow in Brandon Thanksgiving Monday, but those winds hit gusts up to 85 km throughout the morning; the town of Killarney peaked at 76 km/per hour. Environment Canada says slightly below seasonal highs are expected for today as we head back to work and school.
–And Mb Hydro reported a number of weather-related power outages across a wide area of eastern, northern and western Manitoba. About 11,000 customers were without power due to downed lines and other weather-related damage; Brandon was not affected. Meantime, a major winter storm hit parts of northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan with snowfall in excess of 30 cm striking a line from Flin Flon through Thompson.
Carberry is about to hold public hearing on a $3.2M new sewage lagoon; Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the town office.
The Bdn Sun says town Council is set to borrow this money to sustain the town’s future growth. Construction could begin in the new year. The lagoons store the wastewater from sinks and toilets from the town. The “big pit” is dug out and lined, so wastewater doesn’t leak into the soil.
U.S. President Donald Trump and mediators signed a deal to end the war in Gaza. Prime Minister Mark Carney called Monday’s diplomatic meeting a “new and important chapter.” The remaining 20 Israeli hostages who are alive were released earlier and are now on Israeli soil. Israel begins the release of hundreds of Palestinian detainees. Preparations are underway at Gaza’s border to ramp up aid entering the war-battered territory
