The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the arrest of a female youth by an off-duty Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer in Brandon.
According to a IIU media release, “on Oct. 21, the Brandon Police Service (BPS) notified the IIU of an incident that occurred on Oct. 19 at approximately 12:04 a.m. According to the notification, BPS was dispatched to a residence in the zero block of Hawthorn Crescent in Brandon. A woman reported that her daughter was brought home in handcuffs after being dropped off by a male, later identified as an off-duty RCMP officer.
BPS learned five youths were playing a game of “Ding Dong Ditch” which involves ringing doorbells of residences and running away. They stated a male at one residence (the male officer) got in his vehicle, gave chase, and apprehended one of the youths. The male officer accompanied the female youth to her residence in handcuffs.
The IIU civilian director determined it is in the public interest for the IIU to investigate this matter.
Witnesses or individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
The investigation is ongoing, so no further details will be provided at this time.”
