– The Calgary Flames have announced the signing of defenceman Oliver Kylington to a three-year, entry-level contract. Kylington was the Brandon Wheat Kings’ first round pick in the 2015 CHL Import Draft, and his signing by the Flames likely increases his chances of playing in Brandon next season. The signing opens a variety of doors for where Kylington could play next season. However, according to the Calgary Sun, Kylington would need clearance from his club team in Sweden in order to play anywhere in North America next season other than the Calgary Flames.
– More NHL deals went down Wednesday. Defenceman Justin Schultz and Edmonton settled before arbitration on one-year contract. Blue liner Jarred Tinordi agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with Montreal. Centre Ryan Kelser re-signed for six years with Anaheim while Stanley Cup winner Johnny Oduya inked a two-year deal with Dallas.
– The final game of the Manitoba Senior Baseball League’s regular season won’t be played. Wednesday night’s scheduled contest between the Brandon Cloverleafs and Neepawa Farmers was rained out, and the league says it won’t be made up. The game was meaningless as far as the final standings were concerned. The MSBL is now looking forward to the start of their playoffs on Monday.
– Major League Baseball has one more day of rest before starting the second half of the season. The regular season resumes Friday with a full schedule of games including the Toronto Blue Jays hosting the Tampa Bay Rays.
– More bad news for the Saskatchewan Roughriders on the injury front. Defensive back Weldon Brown is going to miss the rest of the season after suffered a torn pectoral muscle. Brown becomes the 11th name added to the team’s six-game injured list and joins quarterback Darian Durant and defensive lineman Levi Steinhauer as players who won’t be coming off that list until the season is over. The Riders also added former Winnipeg Blue Bomber Dan West to their practice roster Wednesday.
– Week four of the CFL season begins Thursday night with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats visiting the Montreal Alouettes. Brandon product Landon Rice will miss his third straight game to start the season, as he remains on the Tabbies’ one-game injury list.
– Through five days at the Pan Am Games Canada sits atop the gold-medal standings with 33, five more than the United States. The Americans, however, lead in overall medals with 86 while Canada has 83. Brazil is a distant third with 55. Westman’s second contingent of athletes begins their competition Thursday as Brandon’s Lisa Barclay and Dustin Schneider and Rivers’ Toon Van Lankvelt begin play with the Canadian volleyball squads.
– Glenboro’s Zach Wytinck is the top Westman golfer after three rounds of the Provincial Junior Men’s Championship. Wytinck fired a five-over par 76 Thursday and sits at 11-over for the championship, good for ninth-place. Brandon’s Austin Dobrescu is tied for 10th at 12-over after a 74 Wednesday while Carberry’s Joel Baron was 82 Wednesday and is in 18th-place. Meanwhile, Erickson’s Bobbi Uhl is seventh in the Junior Women’s Championship going into the third and final round Thursday.
– The Prairie Wolf Pack fell to 1-and-1 Wednesday at the Canadian Under-20 Women’s Rugby Championship in Regina, falling 38-12 to the Ontario Blues. Souris’ Amy and Emily Tuttosi and Brandon’s Brittany Boschman are members of the Wolf Pack squad. Meanwhile, the Prairie Wolf Pack Under-19 men’s team fell 45-3 to Ontario Wednesday in the opening game of their championship.
– Caitlyn Jenner accepted the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs Wednesday night while urging acceptance for others who are transgender. Jenner received a standing ovation from the sporting world’s biggest stars after her 10-minute speech during the annual awards honouring the year’s top athletes and moments. Jenner says she wants to use her powerful celebrity platform to help transgender people achieve acceptance.
