We’re already seeing warnings that Manitoba will get hit by a wicked Polar Vortex this winter, but for now it remains pretty warm. On Sunday – 18 new heat records were set across the province including in McCreary, Melita, Portage la Prairie, and Winnipeg. Later this week, the cooldown will begin.

Until the freeze-up arrives, the Mounties are urging caution when walking on icy waterways – two separate drownings happened last weekend in northern Manitoba due to thin ice. Two men, aged 44 and 47, died – and a 72 year old woman was rescued. The incidents happened at Norway House and Pimicikamak Cree Nations.

Police arrested a man at Swan Valley Health Centre on Sunday on weapons charges. He had reportedly locked himself in the bathroom in the ER, and when he emerged – he was carrying a knife. Police say he was not a patient, and officers were forced to use a tazer to take him into custody.

Two grizzly bears that could be connected to a recent attack on a group of students and teachers in BC, have been captured. DNA taken from both will be tested. Locals in Bella Coola say bear encounters have increased because more of the animals have been forced into the region due to logging, forest fires, and drought.

Manitoba’s French health services are getting a boost. Over the next four years, the federal government will give the province $2.1 million dollars to collect data regarding the language preference of patients – and how many health-care workers have the ability to speak French. The province says offering care in both official languages will help Manitoba attract skilled professionals and strengthen the workforce.

and it IS Christmas package season – and Purolator knows exactly how many they’re moving around the country. From the start of November to the end of the year, Purolator says it’ll handle 52 million packages – or about 1.3 million a day. This is an increase of about 9 million from last year’s holiday season.
