Manitoba Labour and Immigration announced today that Lockhart Plumbing and Heating Ltd. in Brandon has been fined as a result of charges under the Workplace Safety and Health Act.
The charges stemmed from an incident on October 19, 2022. According to a release, a plumber employed by Lockhart Plumbing and Heating Ltd. had been dispatched to a residence to investigate an ongoing sewer smell. While attempting to unclog a sewer drain, the plumber was over-exposed to hydrogen sulfide and later died.
The province said in the release that Workplace Safety and Health officials conducted a thorough investigation before laying the charge.
On May 28, 2025, Lockhart Plumbing and Heating Ltd. pleaded guilty to section 4.2(b) of the Workplace Safety and Health Act, namely, failing to provide information, training, supervision and facilities to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the safety, health and welfare of their workers.
The courts imposed a $5,000 fine with an additional $2,500 to be paid to the Education Fund.
