After MTV Music Goes Dark Fans Recreate sic videos..
Almost immediately after officially shutting down its remaining music-only channels around the world citing declining viewership and costs, fans of classic MTV launched
MTV Rewind. The new fan-made site streams music videos nonstop in an old-school, channel-flipping style with no algorithms, playlists, or control. Pulling videos from the 1970s through today, it recreates the unpredictable mix that once introduced viewers to new artists simply by accident.
The quick embrace of the site shows just how much people still miss the shared, communal feel of letting music surprise them.
The Channel: MTV Rewind has 11 channels at the time of writing, including one that features videos from the original channel’s first day of existence in 1981. There’s a channel dedicated to MTV Unplugged performances, a rap-focused stream, one for each decade from the ‘70s to the ‘20s and (my personal faves) 120 Minutes and Headbangers Ball options. MTV Rewind has so far pulled in more than 33,000 music videos. That’s over two months worth of music, as Loudwire notes.
This is so cool!
