One of the best ways to keep floors cleaner in winter is to place washable mats both outside and inside entry doors. The more slush you trap at the door, the less ends up on your floors. Wash mats frequently, and consider keeping a second set on hand so one is always ready to go. It also helps to ask everyone to remove outdoor shoes before heading farther inside.
To prevent scratches and salt staining, damp-mop entryway floors every day or two using warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Finish by absorbing excess moisture with an old towel or dry mop.
