The next provincial election is now only a year away, and the NDP have a new candidate in Turtle Mountain that they hope can flip the riding from Blue to Orange for the first time in its modern iteration.
Rick Pauls, a longtime Mayor of Killarney-Turtle Mountain who served as Mayor for 13 years before becoming a councilor, has announced his intent to run for the NDP in 2027. The seat is up for grabs as current MLA Doyle Piwniuk has announced he won’t seek re-election.
“Thank you to everyone for coming out today!” Pauls posted on his Facebook page after his public announcement alongside Premier Wab Kinew. “Looking forward to representing this area in the next provincial election! Orange is the new Blue!”
The Turtle Mountain Riding was briefly abolished in 2011 as the area’s representation was redistributed, but it returned in 2019. The riding has voted Conservative in each of the past six elections dating back to 1981.
