Measles exposures continue to rise in Manitoba, and while the latest confirmed exposure sites are in Winnipeg and the Winkler region, public health officials say the risk extends across the province — including Western Manitoba.
Manitoba Health has released a new list of measles exposure locations from March 16 and 17, all of which are in Winnipeg or at Boundary Trails Health Centre near Winkler. While no new Western Manitoba exposure sites have been identified in this update, officials stress that measles is spreading widely enough that any region of the province — including Brandon and surrounding communities — should remain alert.
The newest exposure sites include several Winnipeg medical clinics, a dental office, and a Shoppers Drug Mart, along with the emergency department at Boundary Trails Health Centre near Winkler. People who were at these locations during the listed times are urged to check their immunization status and monitor for symptoms.
Public health officials say anyone born in 1970 or later who has never received a measles vaccine and has never had measles should get vaccinated as soon as possible. Preventative treatment may be available within six days of exposure for those who are unvaccinated.
Measles continues to spread rapidly in Manitoba, with cases rising sharply this year. The illness is highly contagious and can be serious, especially for infants, pregnant people, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms typically appear 7–21 days after exposure and include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a blotchy rash that spreads from the face downward.
Western Manitoba residents are encouraged to review their immunization records, watch for symptoms, and contact Health Links or their local health‑care provider if they believe they may have been exposed. A full list of exposure sites across Manitoba is available on the provincial website.
