The Manitoba government’s latest round of Green Team funding includes support for projects in Brandon and Rivers — but the headline number attached to the program is much larger. The province says this year’s Green Team allocations will help create about 1,900 summer jobs for young people across Manitoba.
That figure isn’t tied to any single community. Instead, it reflects the combined total of seasonal positions funded through hundreds of grants awarded to municipalities, non‑profits, recreation groups, neighbourhood associations, and community organizations provincewide.
Green Team grants cover wages for youth hired to maintain parks, clean public spaces, support recreation programs, run community events, and assist with local improvement projects. Each organization applies for a specific number of positions, and the province funds those roles based on need, capacity, and available budget. When all approved positions are added together, the total reaches roughly 1,900 jobs.
This year’s list includes several Westman recipients. Brandon Parks will receive $22,500 to support green‑space maintenance, while the Rivers Baseball Association will receive $2,800 for grounds upkeep. Those grants will fund a handful of local summer jobs, but they are just two entries in a long provincewide roster.
The Green Team program is designed to serve two purposes: provide meaningful summer employment for youth and help communities complete maintenance and improvement projects they might not otherwise have the capacity to handle. Jobs typically run from late spring through the end of summer, depending on the organization.
The province says the program continues to be one of its most effective tools for connecting young people with paid work experience while supporting community‑level projects across Manitoba.
