A 19‑year‑old woman is in hospital after being stabbed several times during an assault in Portage la Prairie late Sunday night.
RCMP were called around 11:30 p.m. to a home on the 100‑block of 1st Street NW, where officers learned a male suspect had chased the victim into the residence, assaulted her and stabbed her repeatedly. Police say the two knew each other.
The suspect, a 34‑year‑old man from Keeseekoowenin, was arrested minutes later while walking nearby. Officers say a knife was found in his backpack, and that he threatened several officers while in custody.
He is facing 11 charges, including aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, break and enter, mischief under $5,000, and multiple counts of failing to comply with a probation order. He remained in custody and was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
The investigation is ongoing.
