Manitobans are being advised to expect a test of the national public alerting system, Alert Ready, taking place Wednesday, May 6, at 1:55 p.m., as part of Emergency Preparedness Week.
Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s Emergency Management Organization says the test is a routine but important step to ensure the system is functioning properly and can be relied upon during real emergencies. Alert Ready is designed to deliver urgent warnings during imminent, life‑threatening situations such as severe weather, wildfires, or hazardous material incidents.
The test alert will be sent across multiple communication platforms, including television, radio, and compatible wireless devices. Officials stress that no action is required from the public when the alert is received — it is strictly a test.
Emergency officials say regular testing plays a key role not only in verifying the technical performance of the system, but also in helping residents recognize what an emergency alert looks and sounds like. Familiarity with the system can reduce confusion and speed up public response should a genuine emergency occur.
Mobile delivery of Alert Ready messages can vary depending on several factors, including whether a device is compatible with the system, current LTE network connectivity, proximity to cell towers, and individual phone settings or software versions. As a result, some residents may receive the alert on certain devices but not others.
Manitobans are encouraged to use the test as an opportunity to ensure their devices are enabled to receive emergency alerts and to discuss emergency plans with family members.
