Emergency room wait times are rising again across Manitoba as hospitals deal with a late‑season surge in respiratory illnesses and ongoing staffing pressures. Recent data shows the median ER wait time in Manitoba is now four hours, an increase of 48 minutes over the past five years .
A new report highlights significant regional differences, with Winnipeg facilities posting the longest median waits at seven hours and 24 minutes, followed by Shared Health sites at four hours and 48 minutes, and Interlake‑Eastern facilities at three hours and six minutes . Individual hospitals in Winnipeg are seeing even more severe delays: St. Boniface Hospital recorded the longest median stay at 10 hours and 30 minutes, with Grace Hospital at 10 hours and six minutes, and Health Sciences Centre at seven hours and 48 minutes .
These pressures are contributing to service disruptions across rural Manitoba, where several smaller hospitals have begun diverting non‑urgent patients to larger centres as they struggle with higher volumes and limited capacity. Health officials say the combination of respiratory viruses, seasonal fluctuations, and staffing shortages is driving the current spike.
While efforts are underway to stabilize staffing and improve patient flow, officials warn that elevated ER wait times may persist until respiratory cases decline and system capacity improves.
