Rising outflow from the Shellmouth Dam has pushed water levels higher along the Assiniboine River, with provincial officials warning the river is expected to crest this weekend. Even after the peak, levels are forecast to remain elevated for several weeks as upstream releases continue and spring runoff moves through the system.
In Brandon, overland flooding has already forced the temporary closure of the Red Willow Pathway and the pedestrian bridge that links key sections of the Assiniboine River Corridor. City crews say the closures are strictly precautionary, aimed at keeping the public away from fast‑moving water and unstable riverbanks.
Officials are urging anyone visiting the river corridor to use extreme caution. High water can change conditions quickly, and even areas that appear safe can become hazardous without warning. Families are being asked to keep a close eye on children and pets, as swift currents and rising water levels pose significant risks.
Residents are also being reminded to respect all barricades and posted signage and to avoid flooded areas entirely until conditions improve. The city says it will continue monitoring the river closely and will reopen pathways and bridges only when it is safe to do so.
Daily river‑level updates are available through the City of Brandon’s open‑data portal at opengov.brandon.ca, where residents can track changes in real time as the Assiniboine continues to rise.
