A fixture in Brandon’s business community whose dealerships have expanded across Western Canada will receive an honorary from Assiniboine College as part of their graduation ceremony this year.
On June 12, AC will recognize Doug Murray, CEO of Murray Auto Group with an Honorary Diploma in Automotive Trades. The ceremony will be June 12 at Assiniboine Credit Union Place.
“It was an honour to hear that I would be receiving the honorary diploma,” said Murray. “It made me feel thankful to be recognized by Assiniboine. I’ve always tried to be a good member of the community, and it felt good to receive the call.”
“Doug Murray exemplifies what it means to build both a successful enterprise and a strong community,” said AC President Mark Frison. “His leadership has created opportunities for countless employees, while his generosity and compassion have made a meaningful difference in the lives of others. He represents the values we strive to instill in our graduates.”
In a release, the college said Murray is being recognized not only for his business accomplishments (Murray Auto Group now has more than 30 locations across Western Canada) but for his community contributions as well. His family has been a driving force behind initiatives such as the “A Sense of Home” campaign, which led to the creation of Murray House, a residence that provides a safe, welcoming place for individuals and families travelling to Brandon for cancer care.
“My advice to the graduates is this—you create habits all the time, so it is important to want to create good ones,” Murray said. “Things like getting to work early, staying organized, being healthy, and always trying to improve.”
According to a release from AC, Murray is the second member of his family to receive an honorary diploma, after his mother, Mildred “Millie” Murray, was awarded an Assiniboine honorary diploma in 2015.
