A Brandon police officer faces an assault charge stemming from an incident following an arrest on June 10 of last year.
According to Manitoba’s Internal Investigation Unit, the use-of-force issue actually occurred after the initial arrest. The incident began with “a report of a male armed with an edged weapon who was out of control at a local high school.” BPS officers arrested the suspect with help from a conducted energy weapon, but it was a use of force encounter after the suspect was in custody that, according to IIU, sent the male suspect to hospital.
As a result, a Brandon police officer has been charged with one count of assault contrary to Sec. 266 of the Criminal Code.
IIU has said they will not comment further as the matter is now before the courts.
