Residents in Minnedosa are being urged to stay alert after a black bear was spotted near the Dari-Isle hill area, on the west side facing the highway. The sighting, shared on social media within the last day, has not yet been confirmed through an official alert from Manitoba Conservation or local authorities, but aligns with a growing pattern of recent wildlife activity across the province.
Across Manitoba, bear sightings in and around communities have become more frequent, with experts pointing to environmental factors such as food shortages and habitat disruption. In recent years, events like wildfires and poor natural food availability have pushed bears to travel farther in search of resources, sometimes bringing them into residential areas.
Local reports elsewhere in the province also indicate bears appearing in towns and neighborhoods, prompting reminders about coexisting safely with wildlife.
While there is currently no official advisory issued specifically for Minnedosa this week, the sighting comes just two weeks after several confirmed sightings near the Minnedosa where conservationists set a trap which came up empty. These recent sightings serve as a reminder that Westman communities are not immune to increased bear activity, especially during summer when bears are actively feeding.
If you spot a bear you are encouraged to:
- Report sightings to Manitoba Conservation at 1-800-782-0076
- Avoid approaching bears, keep a safe distance, and back away slowly
- Secure garbage, pet food, and attractants around homes
Staying informed and cautious can help keep both residents and wildlife safe during peak bear activity season
