The Manitoba government says plans are moving forward for significant improvements to Provincial Trunk Highway 2 in the Westman region, with the project currently in the design phase and tendering expected later this year.
Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor announced the next steps for the project, which will focus on upgrading approximately 22 kilometres of highway between the west junction of Highway 21 and a point two kilometres west of Provincial Road 250 near Souris.
“Our government is committed to making strategic investments that keep Manitobans moving safely and efficiently,” Naylor said in a news release. “Advancing work on PTH 2 reflects our focus on improving critical infrastructure while supporting economic activity in communities across the region.”
The province expects construction on the highway improvement project to begin in 2027. Officials say the work is intended to improve both safety and reliability along a key transportation corridor used by residents, businesses and agricultural producers in southwestern Manitoba.
In addition to the larger highway project, Manitoba is planning a shoulder restoration initiative on Highway 2 near its intersection with Highway 83. The project will cover roughly 20 kilometres of roadway and carries an estimated cost of $350,000.
According to the province, the shoulder restoration work will improve driving conditions and help complement additional highway upgrades scheduled for the area next year.
The Highway 2 projects are part of Manitoba’s broader effort to strengthen the provincial highway network and maintain dependable transportation links for communities across the province.
The government says further details on transportation infrastructure projects can be found through Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s online capital project map.
Tendering for the Highway 2 improvements is expected this fall, with construction anticipated to get underway in 2027.
