The Assiniboine River has declined steadily in recent days, particularly at 1st Street in Brandon, and the City of Brandon has announced some changes in their efforts to both manage the flooding and cover it.
In a release on their social media, the City said they would be shifting their approach from response to recovery as the river continues its decline. As such, they won’t be offering daily river level readings any longer, though they have promised to keep sharing important flood-related information, as well as recovery progress.
“City crews remain actively monitoring dikes, pumps, and flood protection infrastructure across Brandon,” they said. “Recovery efforts are already underway in some areas and will continue in phases as conditions allow. This is a slow moving process and the city is assessing flood infrastructure, mitigation sites, and affected areas to ensure recovery work can be completed safely and efficiently.”
The City also pointed out that while water levels may still be declining, the river remains high and could still be dangerous. They’re asking residents to take care as fast-moving water, saturated ground, erosion, and unseen hazards are all still potential risks.
