A 25-year-old man from Portage la Prairie faces charges including attempting to disarm a police officer after an incident at the Portage District General Hospital, RCMP announced today.
According to police, the incident took place over the long weekend at about 1:45 AM on August 3. RCMP allege one of their officers who was guarding a prisoner at the hospital was attacked by an unknown adult male in the emergency room area.
In their release, police said the officer requested backup and fought to control the man with the assistance of hospital staff in the reception area. The man then attempted to take away the officer’s firearm. More officers from the Portage la Prairie RCMP detachment arrived to help with the arrest, during which police allege the man, while being handcuffed, tried to take a firearm from the holster of a different officer. One officer sustained minor injuries and was treated at the hospital.
Dylan Twovoice, 25, from Portage la Prairie, is charged with assault on a police officer, two counts of disarming a police officer, mischief under $5,000, and resist/obstruct peace officer. None of the charges against him have been proven in court and he is presumed innocent.
RCMP continue to investigate.
