As students return to class after what was an unusually dangerous summer on Manitoba roads, Manitoba RCMP are asking both students and drivers to be cautious and offering them some safety tips for the start of the new school year.
The first tip they offered was to watch for lower speed limits, which took effect in Brandon and Winnipeg at the start of September in school zones. Police added that drivers should still be cautious driving near school zones where speed limits are not reduced, as there’s a greater likelihood that children will be getting in and out of vehicles in these areas.
Police also encourage watching out for crossing guards (and stopping when they signal for you to do so), making sure you’re not driving distracted, and always stopping for school busses when they have their lights flashing and their stop sign extended ( the fine for passing a stopped school bus that has its flashing lights on is $670).
For parents talking to their kids about road safety, RCMP advise discussing walking the safest route to school or the bus stop, walking on the sidewalk or away from the roadway, putting devices away and being alert when walking, wearing fitted helmets if riding a bike or scooter to school, and crossing at marked crossings or crosswalks and following the crossing guard’s directions.
“Finally, some of the oldest advice remains relevant today,” said RCMP in a release. “Remind children to not talk to strangers, don’t accept rides from people without consulting with a parent or caregiver first (even if the child knows the individual) and walk in groups with friends or relatives whenever possible.”
The release also said that talking to children about online safety (including talks about online games, the apps kids are using, and who they’re chatting with) is more relevant now than ever.
