The Manitoba government is encouraging residents to take part in Orange Shirt Day events on September 30, with more than 50 gatherings planned across the province to honour residential school survivors and remember the children who never returned home.
Premier Wab Kinew said Orange Shirt Day provides an opportunity for Manitobans to come together in the spirit of truth and reconciliation through walks, ceremonies, educational events, feasts and community gatherings. The day is observed annually on Sept. 30 and coincides with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a time to reflect on the lasting impacts of the residential school system and support ongoing reconciliation efforts.
To help residents find events in their communities, the province has launched an interactive online map featuring details for more than 50 Orange Shirt Day activities taking place throughout Manitoba. This year, the provincial government provided $1 million through the Orange Shirt Day Fund to support community-led events and initiatives focused on education, reflection and commemoration.
In Brandon, residents are invited to take part in Orange Shirt Day festivities at the Riverbank Discovery Centre. The event will bring the community together to recognize survivors, honour those who never made it home, and promote learning about the history and legacy of residential schools. Organizers say the gathering will provide opportunities for reflection, education and community connection.
