In both Brandon and other communities around WestMan, some councilor or mayoral candidates face tightly contested election battles. Others, however, can already begin planning their upcoming four-year term.
With the passing of the September 22 deadline, several council candidates and mayors have been acclaimed. This means they were the only candidate registered to run for their position.
Among these is Portage la Prairie Mayor Sharilyn Knox. Knox had already served one term as Mayor of Portage (and had served on city council prior to that) and was acclaimed for a second term after running unopposed.
Elsewhere, some RMs have had their entire list of council candidates acclaimed. A spokesperson for the Municipality of Cartwright-Roblin confirmed that all of their candidates had been acclaimed.
In Brandon, councilor Bruce Luebke of Ward 6 was acclaimed for a third term, but he was the only candidate to have this happen. All other wards, and the position of mayor, will require an election.
Manitobans will head to the polls on October 28.
