Brandon Animal Control is advising residents to be vigilant after receiving numerous reports of coyotes in the area surrounding the Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex off Parker Boulevard.
While no attacks on people or pets have been reported, Animal Control says several coyotes have been observed coming within a few feet of individuals walking their dogs. Officers will continue to patrol the area and monitor the situation.
Residents are encouraged to report any additional sightings by calling Brandon Animal Control at 204-729-2345.
Although coyote attacks are considered extremely rare, officials are reminding the public to take extra precautions, particularly when accompanied by young children or small pets. Pet owners should keep animals on a short leash, supervise them closely, and avoid letting them roam unattended.
Animal Control also stresses the importance of reducing food sources that may attract wildlife. Fallen fruit, bird seed, outdoor pet food, and unsecured garbage can all draw coyotes into residential areas. Residents are strongly urged not to feed wildlife, either directly or indirectly, as coyotes that become accustomed to human-provided food may lose their natural fear of people and behave more aggressively.
If confronted by a coyote, experts recommend staying calm, making noise, appearing as large as possible, remaining in a group, and avoiding running, which could trigger a chase response.
Additional information on coyote behaviour and safety precautions is available through the Province of Manitoba.
