Consumers in Manitoba are being advised to check their snack cupboards after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a nationwide recall for Smarter Snacks Vegan Protein Puff Chili & Lime Flavored snacks. The recall was issued because the product contains milk that is not declared on the label, posing a potential health risk for people with milk allergies or sensitivities.
The affected product comes in a 50-gram package and carries the UPC code 8 684041 306837. The CFIA says the recall applies to all lots where milk is not listed among the ingredients.
The snack was distributed nationally across Canada, including through online sales, meaning it may have been available to Manitoba consumers.
According to the CFIA, consuming the product could cause a serious or potentially life-threatening reaction for those allergic or sensitive to milk. Consumers who have the recalled product are advised not to eat, serve, sell, or distribute it. The product should be thrown out or returned to the place of purchase.
The recalling firm is Empire Health Distribution Inc.. The CFIA says a food safety investigation is ongoing and additional recalls could follow if other affected products are identified.
No widespread illnesses have been reported, although the agency says at least one reaction has been associated with consumption of the product.
