Brandon Food Council Helping Build a More Sustainable Food Future
The Brandon Food Council is playing a key role in the growth of Brandon’s Food Rescue Store, supporting a move that represents far more than just a change of address.
Now located in the former Prairie Oasis Centre at 241 8th Street in downtown Brandon, the Food Rescue Store has gained the space needed to expand its impact on both food security and food waste reduction. The larger facility will allow the organization to build on its core mission of rescuing surplus food that might otherwise end up in landfills and making it available to families looking to stretch their grocery budgets.
The move aligns closely with the Brandon Food Council’s vision for a more sustainable and equitable food system. Through its strategic plan, the council promotes reducing food waste, improving food access, strengthening local food networks and creating economic opportunities throughout the Westman region.
The expanded location opens the door to a multi-faceted community hub. In addition to offering rescued food at affordable prices, the facility includes a café area designed to encourage community connection and social inclusion. Plans are also underway for a rentable commercial kitchen space that could support food entrepreneurs, community groups and educational programming.
The Food Rescue Store embodies several of the priorities championed by the Brandon Food Council, including creating a more efficient food distribution system, supporting sustainable consumption and advancing a circular economy approach to food waste. Rather than seeing surplus food as a liability, the model turns it into a valuable community resource.
As Brandon continues to address rising food costs and growing concerns about waste, the new downtown location represents an important investment in a healthier, more connected and more sustainable local food system.
