Neelin Spartans’ standout Alison Quiring is heading to the West Coast to continue her volleyball career.
Quiring has committed to the Trinity Western Spartans for the 2014-2015 Canada West season.
"Obviously they have an excellent team, but that was the case with other schools I was looking at as well, so I had to look at other aspects other than just the volleyball. They really had some of the academics I was looking at," Quiring told CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston. "When I went there I really enjoyed the company of the girls, I had a great time with them and I felt like I fit in. I felt like I belonged there and it fit with my requirements."
Quiring helped her high school team to a runner-up finish at the AAAA provincials this past season and was named a tournament all-star in 2012 when the Spartans took home the top prize for the first time in team history.
The Spartans’ star middle was recognized by Volleyball Manitoba as a graduating all-star and was selected to the all-Manitoba team.
"It was years in progress. You don’t really think about it much anymore because it’s been part of my life for so long," said Quiring. "I did work really hard for this. All the hours spent in the gym, all the workouts, the tournaments on the weekend, the amount of things I gave up. It is really nice to see it payoff."
Quiring is the fifth Spartan to put pen to paper and her high school coach Kevin Neufeld is confident she can succeed at the next level.
"It’s a real good team. Trinity Western has been one of those top four teams now for about 10 years. That’s a real good challenge for her. She’s one of those very top elite middles in the country for sure," said Neufeld. "How well she’ll progress, some of its just being patient and getting used to the training, but for sure she’s going to be someone that can play at that level."
Setter Amy Gordon is joining the Mount Royal Cougars, libero Jamie Campbell has committed to the Brandon Bobcats, outside hitter Kristine Ward has signed with the Regina Cougars and middle Paige Thomson is taking the basketball route with the Victoria Vikes.
