Brandon product Lisa Barclay and her UBC Thunderbirds have a chance to go into the history books.
The T-Birds are vying for a seventh national straight title, which would be a first for women’s volleyball while also equaling the longest streak in a CIS team sport, matching the Victoria Vikes’ seven consecutive men’s basketball championships from 1980 to 1986.
Barclay said on Monday Sports Talk this week that it was tough to keep the high stakes in the back of their minds, however words of wisdom from the Man In Motion turned things around.
"I think that’s kind of what got us in trouble late in the regular season. We had a couple losses. After that Rick Hansen came and talked to our team and he just emphasized the fact that dynasties are built one point at a time, not all at once. I think that really helped our mindset," said Barclay.
Barclay and the top-ranked T-Birds are taking on the host Regina Cougars in the quarter-finals on Friday.
Tyler Crayston and Lanny Stewart also spoke with Barclay on receiving Canada West player of the year honours and a busy summer with the Canadian national women’s volleyball team.
