The top-seeded Virden Golden Bears made history on Saturday by capturing their first-ever ‘AAA’ girls’ provincial high school basketball championship by beating the R.D. Parker Trojans 64-60 in the final.
Heidi Smith was recognized as the Most Valuable Player while teammate Logan Biccum was named an all-star.
Meanwhile, tournament all-star Paige Thomson led her Neelin Spartans to a 59-47 victory over the Lorette Scorpions in the girls’ bronze medal game.
On the ‘AAA’ boys’ side, Neelin dropped a 72-50 decision to St. James Jimmies in the third-place game with Quinton Hunter of the Spartans being selected to the tournament all-star team.
The Souris Sabres fell 69-39 to the Teulon Saints in final of the ‘AA’ girls’ provincials while the Boissevain Broncos finished runner-up on the boys’ side following an 83-72 setback against the Carman Cougars.
Brandon Bobcats’ recruit Shayna Mathison earned MVP honours in leading her #1 ranked Hamiota Huskies to a third straight ‘A’ girls’ title with a 60-58 win over the Glenboro Panthers in the final.
Top-seeded Glenboro captured the ‘A’ boys’ title by beating the Pinawa Panthers 66-64 in the final.
