The Virden Oil Capitals surrendered three unanswered third period goals and dropped a 4-1 decision to the Dauphin Kings in Manitoba Junior Hockey League playoff action on Tuesday night.
Dylan Butler scored a pair of third period goals including a shorthanded marker for Dauphin in the third period while Brett Hope added an empty-net goal.
Cole Hamblin scored the lone goal for the Oil Capitals while Adam Iwan made 21 saves in the Virden net.
"If a bounce or two would have went our way the outcome of the game could have been different," said Hamblin after the game, "We’re battling hard. It’s just a matter of holding onto the puck that extra second to make a play or getting a puck in deep instead of turning it over. Little things like that make the difference in turning a loss into a win."
Virden went 0-for-6 on the man advantage and gave up Butler’s shorthanded goal with 6:12 remaining in the third period that turned a 2-1 game into a 3-1 contest.
"Probably the shorthanded goal," replied GM and coach Troy Leslie when asked about the turning point, "I mean you can go back earlier in the period and talk about the second goal, but we had a bit of momentum going and I think the shorty kind of killed us a little bit."
The Oil Caps’ are now trail the Sher-Wood Division Final 2-0 with Game #3 in Dauphin on Thursday night.
Virden overcame the same 2-0 deficit to win their first round series against the Swan Valley Stampeders and the club is confident they can find a way to rally back again.
"No one is panicking," said Hamblin, "We’re really composed and everyone knows that if any team can do it, we can do it. We’ve had the belief all year."
Game #4 is back at Tundra Oil and Gas Place in Virden on Saturday (7:30 p.m).
