Columbus, OH (CKLQ) – A four goal third period lifted the Assiniboine Community College Cougars to a 6-1 win over North Dakota State Bison in the first game of the American Collegiate Hockey Association National tournament.
The Cougars went 2 for 3 on the powerplay, and Rachel Charles scored the game winning goal back in the first period to lead the team to an opening game win.
Haylee Anderson was the other goal scorer in the first period for the Cougars, and they left the opening frame with a 2-0 lead.
The Bison scored in the second period with a goal by Mary-Carmen Przekwas.
But in the third period, the Cougars scored four unanswered goals, by Blair Bodie, the second goal by Anderson, Karli Frederick and Kaelei Rink.
Miranda Cook only had to stop 16 shots in the dominating victory.
The Cougars outshot the Bison 48-17.
After the first day of competition, Assiniboine is tied with Bishops for first in the "D" Division.
The winner of the group moves onto the semi-finals.
They will take on Bishops at 3:45pm on Thursday.
