A few yeas ago I started to notice the occasional bump in our lawn. I remember thinking “Hmmm…we must have a mole or gopher” and didn’t really think much more about it. I was hoping that over the approaching winter the situation would correct itself and the ground destroying little pest would disappear. Boy was I wrong – on both counts. The following year I noticed there were more and more small bumps, it seemed to be spreading at a rapid rate. What used to be a soft lush lawn was now more like bumpy backroad that was no longer pleasant to walk through. In fact it became a challenge to not roll an ankle while cutting the grass. Walking through the neighborhood I realized that I was not the only one with this strange problem. What the heck could this be. After much googling, research, and questioning everyone I knew about this weird phenomenon I heard the words I had been dreading, “you’ve got nightcrawlers”. I’m learning that getting rid of them isn’t all that easy, it’s quite a process actually, and if the neighbors don’t take the same actions, chances are you’ll have them back in very short order. Time to wage war on these little critters! If you’re looking for me I’ll be out in the yard preparing potions and running over my lawn with a heavy roller. Helpful tips welcome!
