For as long as I’ve lived in an urban area, I’ve seen cyclists clamouring for “equal road rights”, and for the record I completely support that. I think that EVERYONE deserves to get where they’re going, and has a right to safely share the road. What drives me insane, however, is how a few bad apples completely throw the rulebook out the road, and think that riding a bicycle gives them a free pass to do what they want on the road.
I’m talking about those I see moving in-between lanes of traffic that has come to a stop at a light. I’m talking about cyclists speed along, changing from sidewalks to streets without bothering to check to see if any vehicles are coming. To be specific, I’m talking about the cyclist I almost saw get creamed because they blew through a crosswalk, on a busy street, where oncoming traffic had no stop signs.
I’m all for equal road rights, but you have to respect the rules of the road. Just because you CAN do things on a bike that you can’t do in a vehicle, doesn’t mean you SHOULD.
