Brandon Police are warning about another phone scam – this one involving social insurance numbers.
They say a caller will claim your social insurance card has been compromised, and then asks for your date of birth, postal code – and SIN number.
Police say the caller claims to be with the Canada Revenue Agency or Service Canada, and may threaten you with arrest or court action if they don’t get the info.
Brandon Police remind you these calls are a scam. “We are warning the public to never provide personal information to anyone who calls you unexpectedly – just hang up the phone. Never call any numbers provided by a suspicious caller, nor provide any payments to callers (especially if they require payment in things like pre-paid credit cards, or gift cards).
While a number on a caller ID display may look official, we want to remind people that caller ID’s can be masked, and made to look like the call is coming from an official number.”
Police say they cannot stop these calls from being made, and you do not need to call police about attempted fraud – but you should contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
