At 6:00 am, Jan 29, Brandon police responded to a report of a fire in the 200 block of Princess Ave E. The detached garage was fully engulfed and was put out by Brandon Fire and Emergency Services. There were no injuries as a result and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

At approx. 12 noon on Jan 27, several 911 calls were received reporting a single vehicle had struck a youth at 18th St and College Ave.  Officers responded to the area and located a 12 year old male who had been crossing in a crosswalk when he was hit by a southbound Jeep Compass. The investigation has determined that another vehicle had stopped for the youth to cross, but the driver of the Jeep was in the other travel lane and did not take notice of the stopped vehicle or the pedestrian. The 12 year old victim was taken to hospital for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries.  The 36 year old female driver was charged for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

At approx. 2:30 PM on Friday, Jan 27, officers were called to a residence in the 20 block of 5th St for a disturbance.  Upon arrival a female at that location indicated she had been assaulted by her boyfriend.  She stated that he left prior to police arrival, after hitting her several times.  The officers located the 19 year old male of Long Plains, a short distance away from the residence and arrested him for assault. He was held overnight and will be released this morning on an Undertaking, with a court date of March 14th..

At approx. 6:45 pm on Jan 27, police were called to the Keystone Centre for a disturbance where several males had discharged bear spray in the Manitoba Room during an event.  Upon arrival officers were able to apprehend the main suspect of the incident, a 17 year old Brandon male.  At the time of his arrest, the suspect, who has extensive history with police, was found in possession of the can of bear spray as well as a concealed knife. The youth will be held overnight for court charged with 2 counts of possess weapon for a dangerous purpose, administer noxious substance, carry concealed weapon, 2 counts of breach of release order, 4 counts of breach of probation.  Although there were several people in the Manitoba Room suffering from the effects of the bear spray, we are not aware of any with lasting injuries.

A second youth (17) believed to be somewhat involved, was located a short time later still on the property.  He was highly intoxicated at the time and was found with a half bottle of liquor concealed in his pants at the time of his arrest.  He was held for several hours at the Police Service but has since been released with 2 charges under the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Control Act.

Brandon police also reported Friday, Jan 27 that they've received a couple of reports where local residents got calls from an unknown male presenting himself as a grandchild in distress.  In both cases the “grandchild” coerced the call taker that they needed to help to pay for bail.  In both cases the suspect convinced the victims to hand over thousands of dollars in cash.  NO ONE will ever take your cash from you for bail here or anywhere else other than at the Provincial Courthouse.  DO NOT give money of any kind to anyone unless you are personally dealing with the Court.
