Brandonite Joel Edmundson is taking a step-by-step approach to reaching the National Hockey League.
The AAA Midget Wheat Gings’ grad was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the 2011 draft and signed his entry level contract last year.
"They’ve got some great defenceman up in the league right now and they’ve got some good prospects too so I’m just happy to join that crew," Edmundson said on this week’s edition of 880, CKLQ’s Monday Sports Talk. "The team’s great, so it’s always good to know that if you get called up you’re going to a first-place team. They got Ken Hitchcock up there, who is one of the best coaches in the NHL. You’ve got all those guys and they’re all helping you out. It’s just making the road up to the NHL a bit easier."
In his rookie season with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, the 20-year-old defenceman has five points, 85 penalty minutes and a plus-seven rating through 47 games.
"At the start of the year I was kind of slow getting into the AHL groove," said Edmundson. "I’m not a numbers guy. I’m a stay-at-home defenceman so I’m not too worried about numbers. The coaches are really happy with my play and so is St. Louis so that’s all I can really ask for."
