The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest of a male that resulted in him sustaining injuries.
A media release says that on May 4, 2023, Brandon Police Service (BPS) reported the following incident to the IIU.
“According to the notification, on May 3 at approximately 6:44 a.m., BPS officers were called to an address in the 500 block of 7th Street concerning a report of an individual who locked themselves inside a storage room and refused to leave. When police arrived, they observed a male exiting the room armed with a metal crowbar and knife. After a brief struggle, the male was arrested. Following arrival at the cells, the male complained a BPS officer had assaulted him during his arrest.
The IIU civilian director has determined it is in the public interest for the IIU to investigate.
