Up-and-coming local rugby stars were in Regina over the weekend for the third annual Prairie Regional Championship.
The Westman Rush under-18 girls’ team had a runner-up showing after falling to Notre Dame in Sunday’s final.
"It served its purpose and got the girls some more playing time," coach Brian Yon told CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston. "There are some good players there. I think the future will be great for those girls in grade nine and grade 10 moving forward."
On the U18 boys’ side, the Westman Warlords had a fourth-place showing; the under-16 Westman boys’ team went winless at the tournament, while the U16 girls’ had a record of 1-2.
Meanwhile, the Manitoba senior men’s team, which included Brandon Barbarian Shawn Sarkonak, finished with a record of 1-1 in a pair of exhibition games.
Team Toba dropped a 27-20 decision against the Regina Prairie Fire, but rebounded with a 24-14 win over the Saskatoon Wolverines.
Sarkonak is among those hoping to get invited to the Prairie Wolf Pack senior men’s training camp coming up in Calgary, which is the final step in the roster being chosen for nationals later this summer.
