The Brandon Wheat Kings kick off the 8 game road trip with a 3-2 win over the Calgary Hitmen on Thanksgiving Monday.
The Wheat Kings got on the board early when Mason Ward was able to spring Rylan Roersma loose on a breakaway allowing the Lethbridge native to make no mistake scoring his first of the season to make it 1-0 Wheat Kings. Shots on goal was very one sided thanks to the 3 powerplay attempts for the Hitmen but Wheat Kings goaltender Carson Bjarnason was solid stopping all 16 shots he faced in the first 20 minutes of the game.
The Hitmen would solve Bjarnason early in the 2nd frame scoring on their 4th powerplay attempt with David Adaszynski beating Bjarnason on the sharp angle to tie it up at 1-1. The Wheat Kings would restore the lead after Jake Chiasson capitalized on a Hitmen turnover beating Ethan Buenaventura to make it 2-1 after 40 minutes.
The Wheat Kings got a much needed insurance goal which turned out to be the game winner. Jake Chiasson would feed Nate Danielson who fired a slap pass to Nolan Ritchie all alone in the crease to extend the lead on the powerplay. With a two goal lead late the Hitmen who take their play into the next gear with Zac Funk scoring his 2nd of the year to make things interesting late in the 3rd. The next shift Funk would throw a dangerous hit on Wheat Kings forward Calder Anderson forcing Anderson to be helped off the ice with what appeared to be an upper body injury. The penalty on Funk would be a 5 minute major and it would allow the Wheat Kings to escape with a 3-2 win to kick off the 8 game road trip.
Wheat Kings Coach Don MacGillivray was happy his club picked up the victory but admits they need to be more discipline, “It wasn’t the prettiest of games but we managed to get the job done. I thought we took about 3 of 4 penalties tonight we need to avoid taking but we got the win and that’s all that matters tonight”.
