DISCLAIMER – BE ABSOLUITELY POSITIVE THAT IF YOU ARE EATING ANY WILD PLANTS, YOU TRIPLE CHECK TO MAKE SURE THEY’RE SAFE FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION!
Growing up, I ate my share of wild flora and fauna. With my dad going hunting every year, our freezer was usually stocked with venison (not to mention all the fishing we always did). My mom was also a student of horticulture when she was in college, and between the two, I quickly learned which plants in the wild were not only safe to eat, but delicious!
Seriously, if you ever see wild fiddleheads growing, PICK THEM (that’s what my picture above is!). Not only are they delicious, they’re full of all sorts of nutrients. As a kid, I can remember going into the bush to pick morel mushrooms with my Baba and Gido…and MAN could they make a delicious mushroom soup! Don’t even get me started on saskatoons…
Have you had the opportunity to sample some of the delicaces that grow wild here in Manitoba? Let me know!
